Post 4: Industry Qualifications and Roles
Employers will be looking at you and seeing if you are qualified enough for the job before hiring you. Some of the important things to have to show that you are qualified are experience such as internships or previous work experience, a portfolio to showcase the work you have done, and references to vouch for your experience. It is also important to do the same with employers. Before committing to a job you should take a look at the company, the people who work there, and the type of work they are doing. It is important that you make sure you are a good match with the company you decide to work with.
When looking at different social media jobs you need to decide what type of company do you want to work for. There are several different kinds of social media workplaces. There are 10 different major social media companies. Those kinds are, Large Social Media Agencies, Large Social Media Companies, Boutique Social Media Agencies, Small Business/Agency, Self Employment, Corporations, Nonprofits, Government, Sports, and Media. Each of these different companies have their perks and disadvantages depending on your wants and needs. My favorites of these types are Corporations, Self Employed, Nonprofit, and Media.
There are also many different roles in social media.
- Social Media Manager- has a focus on creating the brand; creates content and responds to people's questions
- Social Media Community Manager- advocate for that brand; creates content and responds to people's questions; can be more personal
- Social Media Coordinator- schedules the posts and content and make sure that everything is posted at the correct times; must be good at planning and be organized
- Social Media Strageist- tends to be more in charge and has to be able understand the big picture and how to execute it
- Content Creator- creates the posts, graphics, images, video, and any other form of media; they work with all the other roles to make sure that the content they are making matches up with the goals, brand, and big picture that is being created
- Multimedia/Video Producer- in high demand; they record, storyboard, produce, write, and edit video to tell a story
- Writer/Editor- they work with content creators and coordinators to support the stories being told and make sure that everything lines up; they may also help the multimedia and video producers write scripts and edit videos
- Other roles include freelancers that can pick and choose what they do, and consultants that help out their clients.
- A lot of these roles can overlap as well and some people make work in multiple roles at one time.
